5 Resources To Redesign the High School Experience

By 3:30pm PST October 18, 2020

This school year, there’s been a lot of “rethinking” happening in homes, schools, and communities across the country. To better meet the needs of educators, students, and families we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to design a new online community called Rethink Together. We can’t wait to share it with you in the coming weeks. (Sign up here to be the first to know when the new site is live!)

In the meantime, we’ve focused our work in four new categories: High School Redesign, High School & Society, High School Life, and High School Beyond Graduation. This week’s issue of Give Me Five gives you a sneak peak into each category.

1. REDESIGN Reimagining High School

High school redesign is all about learning, adapting, and innovating.

Why it matters: We’re committed to ensuring all students have meaningful and engaging learning opportunities and graduate ready to succeed in life. We curated dozens of resources, conversations, and content to inspire change and innovation in education.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve added plenty of information and tips for remote and hybrid learning too!

Here you’ll find content for:

  • Teaching and learning practices
  • School-wide approaches to rethinking
  • Family and community engagement
  • Design tools and resources

2. CHANGE Creating a More Equitable Education System and Community

This school year isn’t just about getting “back to normal.”

Why it matters: 2020 is a year for the history books: a global pandemic, months of uprisings for social justice, and a historic presidential election. This year has made it clear that it is crucial for school culture and curricula to incorporate real-world problems.

Under this category, we’re connecting high school with society. You’ll learn more about:

  • Equity, access, and opportunity
  • Anti-racism education
  • Education policy
  • Civic engagement and education

3. EXPERIENCE Amplifying and Supporting Students

The high school experience is so much more than just what students learn in class.

Why it matters: We want to make sure all students’ voices  are heard, and that their needs are met. We’re committed to giving students a platform to share their stories and discuss what matters to them.

Plus, we have plenty of tips for parents and educators to support their students during remote and hybrid learning.

This category is all about high school life and experience. Explore related articles and read about:

  • Student experiences
  • Student agency and identity
  • Teen activism
  • Social-Emotional Learning and mental health
  • The school year cycle (back to school, graduation)

4. PREPARE Helping Students Succeed Beyond the Classroom

Teaching students the life skills crucial for lifelong success.

Why it matters: As educators, we want to give students the necessary tools to succeed in the classroom, career, and life. We can prepare students for the future by teaching beyond the classroom curriculum.

Topics include:

  • Planning and preparing for college
  • Career exploration and discovery
  • “Adulting”
  • Networking and relationships

5. STRENGTHEN A New Tool To Improve Remote and Hybrid Learning

How well is your school meeting your students’ needs during remote and hybrid learning?

Why it matters: Introducing our new discussion and self-assessment tool. We developed this tool to help you create systems and routines to set students up for success.

Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Questions to think about and discuss your school’s current plan
  • Assessment worksheets to create effective systems and routines

XQ X-tra It’s time to hit the campaign trail!

With the election right around the corner, XQ is launching Build A Campaign. Build a Campaign helps students create their own campaigns to encourage their community to vote and recruit poll workers.

We’ve provided the tools, structures, and resources to help students support civic engagement and democracy. Even if students can’t cast a ballot in the 2020 election, they can still make a difference.

Stories and insights from the changemakers rethinking high school—in XQ schools and beyond.
